Rev. Fr.

Unity in Pastoral Efforts urged in Initial Review of the RCIA Syllabus implemented in Sabah Dioceses
(Tatal, Keningau) About 105 parish representatives who are involved in RCIA from parishes of Kota Kinabalu archdiocese, Keningau diocese and Sandakan diocese gathered for the first time to review on the topics RCIA sessions at Keningau Retreat Complex of Tuarid Taud, Tatal to on 8th to 9th October .

As pointed out by Fr. Boniface Kimsin ,Chairman of Malaysian Catechetical Commission, in his input on 9th Oct, the reason for this review was that RCIA process initiated by Rev.Fr Chi in 1983 and its syllabus based on LUMKO, introduced in 1988, the concern book adapted to local church was later published in three languages in 1998, has never been reviewed since then. (the time has come for it to be adapted to the current pastoral situation in local context i.e Malaysian context).

The much needed adaptation is also in response to the need of New Evangelization in reaching out to people who have not known Christ yet, Catholics who have lapsed in their faith and Christians who are not mature in their faith. There are two ways of witnessing the Catholic faith to the above categories of people: a) the witness becomes the’ living Gospel’ to people who interpret bible according to the language of Life and b) to share one’s experience about the graces of God. Evangelization is a divine call for continuous conversion in which the believers of the whole Church are commissioned to live the teachings of God and the life of the Community. He stressed the importance of participative approach in evangelization. In shorts, the RCIA process needs to be reviewed for its effectiveness in developing the Christian attitude of the believer.

The event begun with an opening Mass in the evening of first day, presided by Bp Cornelius Piong , concelebrated by Fr Boniface Kimsin, Fr Ambrose Atang and Fr Bonaventure Unting at the open chapel of the compound area.

During the homily of Bishop Cornelius Piong , the Episcopal President of Catechetical Commission of Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei, shared his experience of being challenged whether the Dioceses of Sabah came together to make decision on matters of evangelization. He acknowledged efforts need to be made for better communication among the three dioceses on pastoral issues as it was the prayer of Jesus before His Ascension to see unity in the Church as witness for Christ to do the will of the Father.
After the Mass, Bp Cornelius in his opening speech urged that the catechists to continue living a life of holiness and unity shown by their active preparation before the gathering and their participation in the RCIA workshop.
During the workshop, participants were divided into 9 groups of mixed dioceses to discuss on the present syllabus of its goodness, inadequacy and suggestions of improvement in the aspects of topics, materials and duration.

The result of discussion will be used as study materials for the coming Sabah Catechetical Team Meeting on 30th November in CDC, K.K headed by Bishop Cornelius and to the Malaysian Catechetical Commission meeting on January next year.

It was a very encouraging workshop and the needs to come together as one body of Christ with one mission to build the kingdom of God here on earth was really felt. Thus more similar workshop is expected in the future.
